Metamorphosis: Art as Research | Research as Art is a practice-led project engaging artists from visual art, film, architecture and music composition in collaboration with academic researchers from the Humanities and Sciences. The project launched in February 2016 with a multimedia exhibition in Smithfield Square, Dublin 7, housed in a pop-up gallery composed of shipping containers. The exhibition was followed by an interdisciplinary symposium on “Collaboration in Research and Arts Practice”, with a keynote talk by Professor Christopher Morris of Maynooth University.
The project commissioned 5 artworks that communicated text-based and experimental research through mixed media art forms. The main goal of the exhibition was to highlight the symbiotic relationship between research and art. The theme of Art as Research | Research as Art was further explored in the symposium, which addressed how we can encourage the formation of interdisciplinary and intersectoral partnerships in Ireland through thoughtful collaborations in/ between research and art practice. The symposium concluded with an interview and performance by Ernst Reijseger, an internationally acclaimed film composer and cellist whose repertoire includes multiple collaborations with Werner Herzog and Martijn Maria Smits.
