Catherine Bergin: The dangers of indifference

In today’s blog I would just like to share one of my favourite poems written by Pastor Martin Niemöller. In it he criticises German intellectuals for not speaking out against the Nazi rise to power. I think warnings against the dangers of political antipathy are equally important today as in the years leading up to and including the war.

First they came for the Socialists, and I
did not speak out-
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists
and I did not speak out-
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did
Not speak out-
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me-and there was
No one left to speak for me.
